Blurts

and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10: 5b

I found an interesting challenge today.

I’m not looking at my Artist’s Way book right now - it’s in a pile of books somewhere by my chair, so some of my wording may be different than what I read - but I wanted to share this with you all.

Along with trying to write three pages a day, something called “Morning Pages,” Julia Cameron suggests an exercise to try.

I was surprised it was as effective as it was.

And it’s simple, really.

Just pick a positive sentence to write about yourself.  As the book pertains mostly to creative types, the suggestions were along the lines of:

I am a creative and confident person.

My artwork is valuable and worthwhile.

I make contributions by my beautiful endeavors.

But I see where you can easily change those to reflect the positives in other situations.

I am valuable and worthwhile in God’s eyes.

I am still a contributing part of God’s plan.

God loves me.

You can pick most any positive thought - one that you wished you believed was true about yourself modeled after the above.

Then, after you’ve chosen your affirmation, write it down ten times.

If you are like me, you will a bit dumbfounded by the thoughts that rise to the surface as your writing.

Julia Cameron calls them “blurts.”

And boy, does my brain blurt out a lot of negativity that is aimed toward myself.

Scripture tells us to take every thought captive.

Writing them down is one way to do that.  Write down those blurts and see them for the lies they are.

You ARE a wonderfully magnificent creation.  It doesn’t matter that are bodies are not what they once were.  The “you” that dwells inside that tent was created by God and created to be loved by God.

Reign in those thoughts.

Counter them with Scripture. (Link to verses as to who we really are in Christ.)

Start telling yourself the truth about who you really are.

(Disclaimer:  This is not intended to be any form of cognitive therapy.  If you feel you will have problems with this exercise, do not do it!  Consult your mental health professional if you have mental health issues, before you try the exercise.)
