Does God Really Deliver Us From Our Fears?

I sought the LORD, and he answered me;  He delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 (NIV)

I do not consider myself to be a Biblical scholar.  There is much I do not know.  I know I do enjoy reading scripture and looking at verses.  Sometimes I see verses in a different light than I did previously.  This verse is one of those verses.

It seems plain that the Psalmist is saying that he sought God and found Him and that God answered him.  The next sentence is what struck me differently.  It says “He delivered me from all my fears.”  The words don’t say that the Psalmist was delivered from the situation he was in.  It says he was delivered from his fears.  Now, is this what the writer meant?  I am not sure.

I know it has meaning for me, though.  I sense God saying that He might not deliver me from the situations I face, but that He will deliver me from the fears that surround them.

Psalm 23:4 says “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”  It too, does not promise the evil will go away, but that we are given the grace to walk though those times with the company of God, who will deliver us from our fear.”

I will admit there are times when I want things to magically change, that I will be delivered from the circumstances.  That is not what God promises though.  I do believe that God does deliver us from circumstances – that healing and miracles occur.  I also believe that a sovereign God also says, “No” sometimes.  But He never says “Yes” to our having to live in fear.  He promises to deliver us from those fears.  He promises to be with us.  And if the Almighty God of the universe is with us, we also have the promise of deliverance from our fears.  Hold on to that promise.

Father God, I praise You that Your word is true.  I do not understand the circumstances we walk through, but we have your assurance that we can make it through when we walk with You.  Amen and amen.  So be it, Lord!
