Father Knows Best

Father's Hand

This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go."  Isaiah 48:17

Ah!  If you remember "Father Knows Best," you are either close to my age, or you enjoy old TV reruns!  Far from the TV shows of today, the father of the show wasn't shown as some sort of bungling idiot, but soneone who - by the end of the 30 minutes displayed wisdom and cared deeply for his family.

The show came to mind when I read today's verse.

Because there are so many times when I think I know what is best for myself - and for others - and end up being so wrong!

I find it interesting that the verse explains to us that we need to be taught what is best for us.  In God's eyes, we are little children who need to be taught.  I have to admit that is not exactly the way I view myself.

I'm already grown up.  I should know what is best for me, right?

I need to be taught what is best for me.  I need to seek out God's guidance and not just go along my merry way thinking, "If God would only do this" or "If only such and such would happen" that life would be good.

It's humbling to admit that we need God to direct us - to show us the way in which we should go.

Humbling ... but true.

Today, I face some tests I am rather afraid of.  Not because of the test itself, but because of the possible result.

And, here I am again, running ahead of God, having already decided what the "best" results would be.

I am so thankful this verse passed by me this morning.  It is something I need to remember.  I need to be continually looking to God.  I need to remember that He is the one who knows what is best for me.  I need to rely on His direction and follow His leading.

It goes without saying that the day needs to be bathed in prayer - as does every day.

But it also needs to be bathed in confidence that the Lord ... my  God ... will be teaching me, leading me, and directing me.

I sorely needed to know that today.

Do you?

Father God, Thank You that You are the God who goes before us.  The God who is never taken by surprise by what will face us this day.  Help us to humble ourselves, as the little children we are, are be open to Your teaching and direction.  Amen and amen.
