For the Times We Are Afraid

Do you ever feel that, as a follower of Christ, you should be immune from fear? Do fear and anxiety seem to freeze your ability to function? God knew we'd all feel afraid at times - and He also gave us the remedy!

There is a song from a children's album that I like to play. The album was written to help children memorize scripture through music.  (Not a bad idea for adults, too!)

My favorite song?

"When I Am Afraid."

It comes from an album called "Hide 'em in Your Heart - Volume 1" by Steve Green.

The words are simply from Psalm 56:3.

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.

I find myself humming the simple tune over and over.

There are many things I could be worried about right now.

Our finances are at kind of a standstill right now and we just got our gas and electric bill.

The world ahead of me looks pretty lonely, right now.  I'm going to miss the companionship and intimacy with the one who, better than anyone else on this planet, knew and loved me - quirks and all.

My health has taken such an odd turn.  I realize it's been 6 months since my heart was behaving itself routinely.

I wonder about my son and daughter growing up without their dad.

In particular I am concerned about the way his death is going to affect our littlest angel's reactive attachment disorder.  She struggles already.  A few years ago she wanted to kill herself so she could go to heaven to be with her birth mom.

Oh so many "what if's" start to flood in - seemingly unstoppable and unending.

That's when the little tune kicks in -

When I am afraid I will trust in You, I will trust in You, I will trust in You.

When I am afraid I will trust in You, in God whose word I praise.

When I am afraid I will trust in You, I will trust in You, I will trust in You.

When I am afraid I will trust in You, in God whose word I praise.

In God I trust, when I am afraid

In God I trust, it's God whose word I praise.

When I am afraid I will trust in You, I will trust in You, I will trust in You.

When I am afraid I will trust in You, in God whose word I praise.

I trust you, Lord.  I really do.

Somehow, singing that little song brings out the heart of a child in me. Sometimes I need sing it over and over (and over!).  But those simple words help me get through some of the most difficult times I've had and no doubt those that will come in the future.

So remember,

When YOU are afraid,

You can trust in Him.

Amen and amen.
