How Confident Are You?

I remain confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Psalm 27:13

I don't know about you, but I am beginning to realize just how easy it is for me to spiral down into negativity.

I am on the email prayer chain for our church and I'm not sure a day ever goes by without one or more requests, some of them devastating.  I've friends who have been diagnosed with cancer and other serious diseases.  My own family struggles so.  And then there is the condition of our world.  Somehow, what was right and good when I was younger is now considered to be judgmental and hateful.  I see things seemingly out of control everywhere I look.

I often don't realize how much these situations affect my daily attitude.

Lately, it feels like God is bringing that to my attention in a number of ways.  I've been reading through Proverbs and so many of them that talk about attitude and speech have hit home.

I read a sermon that said much of the same thing.

I have been convicted of the negativity that I can spread to those around me.

My verse of the day in my Bible reading (above) summed things up nicely for me.

Do I still expect to see God's goodness?  Am I counting on it? Am I, as the verse says, confident of it?

I know my expectations are that the life after this one will be filled with joy - that it will be so much better than this one.  But am I truly convinced that I will see the "goodness" of the Lord in this life.

I truly had to stop and think about it.

I even had to redefine "goodness."

It is not goodness as in "I will get everything I want."  It is not having each and every prayer answered.  It is not that the world condition will suddenly change for the better.

What I do believe the verse says it that God will be active in our lives and the lives of those around us.  There will be the knowledge of who He is.  There will be new believers.  God's creation will still be recognized.

God will still be working to bring good out of the difficult situations in our lives and the lives of those around us.

It is up to each of us to be open enough to look for that good.

If today is one of those days when all seems to be going wrong - when the word "goodness" is not one you would apply, take heart.

God has promised us that we will still see in goodness in this lifetime.  We just have to look and remain confident that it will happen!

Father God, help us not to get trapped by all the the negative things around us.  Bring a strong conviction to our hearts that we will see Your goodness in this lifetime.  Praise Your Holy Name.  Amen and amen.
