Living in God’s Presence

Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in Your presence.  Psalm 140:13

There are two spiritual concepts I have been grappling with lately.

Both have to do with the presence of God.

When I was a kid - God had a house that we went to once a week - His church - and He stayed there.  I’d go visit the next Sunday - and all was well.

A lot of time has passed since then and I’ve learned so much more.

I’ve learned that God’s church is not a building - it is the group of people who are called by His name.

I’ve also learned that you don’t have to go to His house to visit.

I guess that sounds rudimentary.

Yet, these two concepts are huge ones for me right now.

Both have to do with being continually in God’s presence.

The awareness that He is always with me is kind of new.  I’ve read the words before - but realizing that He is with me all of the time is kind of mind boggling.  How and why, with all the people in this world - does He choose to be with me?

<Insert story of struggle with low self-esteem here>

That means, at any (and every) given moment - I am in the presence of God.

I don’t know about you - but my reaction is either, “Wow!  How cool!” or kind of an embarrassed realization that I am living my life out in front of Him day-by-day – moment by moment.

The second concept - one that is even harder for me to hold on to, is that I can make a conscious effort to be aware of His presence moment by moment.

It’s a struggle to stay in the ‘now.’  But now is where I am and now is where I will find Him.

It’s so easy for me to get trapped in my past - or to look to tomorrow - that I forget about here and now.

Here and now is where I can, moment by moment, find Him.

This practicing His presence - being fully aware of Him is so challenging for me.  So much distracts me.

Yet, when I do sink back and relax in His presence, my life changes - even if only for that moment.

So I, like Brother Lawrence (my what company I put myself with!), will make a conscious effort right now - to be aware of Him.

I will attempt to live today, aware of the fact, that I am abiding in His presence this very moment.

What a holy thought!

In the very presence of God.

(Here are some Scripture that might encourage you to be aware of His continual presence.  I’ve put it in PDF format as well, if you care to download it.)
