Our Ace in the Hole

Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 2 Kings 19:14

If I were a poker player (which I'm not, but I watched my dad play many a game), I think I'd be described as someone who keeps their hand "close to their chest."  While I share many things - there are also things I keep closed up inside.

I think I even resist sharing them with God.

Kind of silly, actually, when He knows anyway.  But I know I shove some things to the back of the closet and prefer not to deal with them.

I guess that is why the above verse hit home for me.

Hezekiah, upon receiving a letter threatening Judah, took the letter and "spread it out before God to read." He hid back nothing.

How much of my life have I simply put before God and then waited?

So many things have happened this week with my own family (our dear little cat is at the vet's as they try to save her), and the lives of close friends and family as they  have been "threatened" by illness and disease.

At first, I felt like I wasn't doing enough.  A kind of helplessness set in.  In truth, the was nothing I could do.  Nothing except pray.

How I tend to minimize the importance of prayer: the importance of spreading it all out before God and giving it to Him.

It reminds me of another poker-playing derived term - laying all your cards on the table.

Yep.  That is what I need do.

Holding things in, worrying, trying to figure it all out myself just doesn't help.  In fact, it doesn't work at all.

Bringing things before God is truly the best thing we can do.

I'm seeing prayer in action this week.  So many people are lifting up my friend's and their family members.  Positive things are happening.

I know they don't always happen.  I'm not naive enough to view God as a "gimme box" who gives us what we want.

But I also know that those prayers, spread before God, are honored by Him, no matter what the outcome.

Do you have things you have been holding inside today?  Are there things that are better spread out before the Lord and prayed over? Perhaps this is the day to stop keeping your cards close to your chest and putting them all out on the table before God.

Prayer is truly our "ace in the hole."

Use it.

Father God, thank you for the privilege of prayer.  Thank you for the opportunities that we have to come before you and lay our problems before You.  Thank you, Lord, that You listen to our words as we open up before You.  Amen and amen.
