Revisiting: Let Your Light Shine

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16 NASB).

You might be saying to yourself, “How in the world can I be a light for the world?  I feel more like a snuffed out candle!”  Chronic illness can do that.   There are days when I think to myself, I have nothing left.  My muscles hurt.  My bones hurt.  I have no energy.  How can I shine for the Lord?

Have you ever looked into the eyes of someone and just known they were a follower of Christ?  That there was something in their eyes that shone?  I’ve never known quite how to describe it before, but now I realize that it is the light of Christ within them.  The light in my body may fade, but the light in my heart need not.  The light in my eyes can still shine for Him simply because I know I am His.

As difficult as it is, I can rally myself enough to know that Jesus is the light within me and that the darkness flees from the light.  I may be one little flame in the darkness, but combine my little light with your little light and the light of another fellow sufferer, and we can indeed light up our world.

I need not believe the lie that there is nothing left for me to do.  I can be a light to the world, simply by being – by being His, and letting that light shine through.

Father God, As we approach the season of darkness, I pray we keep our hearts open to you and realize that we can still be your representation of light to the world.  As long as our eyes open in this world, someone, somewhere needs to see that light.  I praise and thank you, Lord.  Amen and Amen.  So be it, Lord!
