Running Away

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. Jonah 1:3

I am learning that my first response to a difficult situation is always the same.

I run away.

When I was younger it was literally running away.

I’ve responded that way for a long, long time.

I started kindergarten much younger than most of my classmates.

It scared me.

I ran home.

Day after day, that poor teacher would try to catch me before I hit the corner that would lead me the two blocks it took to get home.

I was painfully shy as I got older.  I’d cross the street or go another direction to avoid talking to someone.

I ran away from something I knew God wanted me to do when I was in grad school.  I semi-jokingly call it my “Jonah” experience.

I run from pain.

I run situations and relationships I feel I cannot control.

I even run from situations where I feel I might possibly fail.

I’ve realized it’s time for me to stop running away - and begin running toward.

I’ve added another book to my reading pile.

Practicing His Presence” by Brother Lawrence.

It’s what I truly need right now.

There are times I feel so alone.  Scared.  Wanting to run away.

There is no longer any place to run to, though.

So, I will run to the arms I am learning to know, and trust that running toward will serve me much better than all those days of running away.

I am running into the very presence of God.

I pray I stay.
