Up All Night

5 Candles

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD make me to dwell in safety."  Psalm 4:8

I've written about this verse before.  Today it found its way to me once again and seemed to call to me.

Sometimes, when issues storm around our family, I fail to realize one word in that verse.  "For You alone, Oh Lord, make me to dwell in safety."

I know prayers are important.  I pray and ask those I know to pray when things get difficult.  I talk to others.  I seek comfort through them, as well.  I need listening and caring hearts around me.

No.  That isn't exactly true.  I want caring hearts around me.  What I do need is God.

God and God alone.

Sometimes it is easy for me to forget that the source of all of the things I seek is God.

I look for earthly solutions at times.  Somehow, I start to think that it is the particular doctor, or test, or even the hospital that will give the solution.

But no, the solution lies in God, who will work through any situation we find ourselves in.  I forget that.

Yet, when I read a verse like today's, it hits home.  God will give me the peaceful sleep I need.  God will give me the reassurances I need.  He ... alone ... makes me to sleep in safety.

I also have to remember that my vision of what I want to have happen and God's solution can look quite different.  I have to redefine the way I am looking for a specific outcome and then put it in God's hands.  And let go.

Perhaps you have heard this saying.  A friend I knew had it posted up over her desk at work.

"Give your troubles to God.  He'll be up all night anyway."

Amen and amen.
