What I've Learned in Three Months

classroom.jpg

It has been three months since my husband's death from cancer.

What have I learned in those three months?

I've learned that life goes on in spite of our family's grieving.

Kids still get sick.

Household appliances still break down.

Problems that existed before still exist today.

I've learned that grieving is personal.

That there is no right or wrong.

I've learned that day-by-day is all I can do.

Funny, it's always been all I have been able to do.

It just seems more real now.

I've learned that people are adaptable.

What seemed impossible to live with becomes normal.

I no longer wake up with a start in the morning, suddenly remembering our loss.  It is integrating itself into our lives.

I've learned that memories hold pain … and love.

"Remember when daddy …." has become part of our household conversations.

I've learned that seasons still change - that the chilliness of spring turns into the heat of summer and that autumn will follow.  Yet for today, the sun still shines outside my window.

I've learned to live with a hole in my heart.

I've learned that life is precious, that we should never - ever wait to tell someone we love them.

I've learned that prayer isn't in the "only" category …  it's not "just" prayers.

It's the most important thing I can do.

I've learned that priorities change.

I've even learned I can handle the finances that seemed like such a puzzle.

And most of all???

I've learned that God is still good.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Psalm 27:13
