What Love Is

Have you ever wondered what love is?  Real love?  Not the, "I'm really hungry and I'd love to have a pizza and by the way, I love the shoes you are wearing" kind of love – but love so real and so solid that it can knock your socks off when the comprehension of what it truly means to be loved by God hits home?

We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 NASB

I read an interesting definition of love the other day - that love is "paying it forward" in action.  Those of you who know the story of my daughter's death, know how important pay-it-forward is to me.

But I never quite viewed it as love.

Being kind.

Yes?

Being compassionate?

Yes.

But as a definition of love itself.

No.

But as I stop to really thing about it, isn't that what God did for each of us?  He sent his Son to die for us.  Us.  Those alive at the time, and all of those who died before, but also for the ones that were to come.

Jesus paid-it-forward for us.

I'm not exactly sure why concentrating on God's love for us has been so meaningful for me right now.  I know I get overwhelmed at the thought of how much I am loved and that God is going through my losses with me.

Things change when I realize how much God loves me.

It tends to want to overflow on to everything around me.

I know it's not easy for us to show our love to others.  Illness and pain can leave us cranky and sometimes demanding. Those feelings begin to melt away when I start to focus on God's love for me.

So, I guess I'm curious about you, my readers.  Do you truly feel God's love?  Are you able to hold on to it in the midst of pain?  Are there places in your life you can allow that love to splash over onto someone else?

I know this is supposed to be about encouragement.

But, in the end, isn't that what love is about, too?

I pray for the revelation of God's love in Your life today - even in the midst of pain.

And as His amazing love fills your soul, spill it out.  Don't even try to keep it to yourself.

There is a never ending supply.

Amen and amen.
