"What's It All About, Alfie?"

Do you have times when you wonder what life is all about?  There is simple answer to a complex question and contrary to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," the answer is not 42!

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,  does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails; 1Corinthians 13:1-8a

Most of us have heard this at weddings.  This may be one passage in Scripture that is well-known even by those who have no relationship with Christ.

Somewhere along the way, it got personal for me; I guess because there are so many things I can no longer do.  I recently met someone (healthy) who works at a homeless shelter.  They were sharing how important their work seemed to them.  It was kind of a calling.

Almost as soon as I hear of the things that others are able to do, I start looking at all I can no longer do.

I realized I was, once again, focusing on doing - and my lack of ability to do so much.  I felt a prompt to search out verses about love and this one came to light first.

I think there is so much focus on what love is in this passage, that we tend to neglect what love isn't.

Love isn't about doing things.  It isn't about working in homeless shelters.  It isn't about proving how close we are to God.  It's not about sacrifice.  At least, it's not if our attitudes are wrong.

It's about who we are inside. And that is something I can focus on.

I can run through the list of attitudes that are listed and confess to you that I often don't do so well at most of them.  But I can focus on those things - rather than all of the things I can't do.

Some of these are tough … really tough.  And I do think undoable without God in our lives.  I know that my love for others often fails.  I am impatient, unkind, jealous, …. you get the idea.

It is then that I cling to the knowledge that God is love.  He loves perfectly.  He loves me perfectly.  He loves you perfectly.

And in this training ground that we call life, we can learn.

We can learn to be … and, if God so chooses, the doing will come later.

What's it all about?

It's all about love.

And we find that live in Jesus Christ.

Father God, thank you for your Word.  Thank you, that when we are so limited in the things we can do, there is no limit to who we can be when we trust in You.  Help us to focus on the ways we can spread your love to others.  Empower us, encourage us, enable us to be who you created us to be - your much loved children.  Amen and amen.
