When God Creates a Painting

art brush.tiff

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

When I begin to paint, I usually have an end result in mind.  I've seen a picture, or a scene that inspires me to try to capture it so that it becomes tangible.

I don't just sit down with my pastels and being to put haphazard strokes on paper.  (Though I've seem some non-representational art that looks that way!) I usually have at least an idea of where I'm headed.  I'll admit to being surprised by the end results some times.  But it all starts with an idea.

And that helps me to understand what the above verse is saying.  It begins to make sense when I view it through the lens of creating my artwork.

There comes a point, about halfway through a painting, when I am sure it will not turn out well.  Sometimes I actually want to throw the painting away.  I'm learning though, that each painting seems to need to go through it's "ugly" stage, to get to where I want it.  I just need to keep going, being confident that the mass of strokes will eventually become a work of art.

These past weeks have been part of that "ugly" stage for me (t'were I a painting, that is!).  Yet I can count on God to bring me through to the place where I am, in His eyes, a work of art. (The NIV says, "For we are His handiwork!")

I may not know where.

I may not know when.

I certainly do not know how.

But He will do it.

And He'll do the same for you.

So, if today, you too are in that ugly stage - if you can't possibly see how God can use what might seem to be the remnants of your life - the ugly strokes - the out of place smudges and stains - hold on.  The creation that is you simply isn't finished yet.

For God created a work of art in You.

How do I know?

Because the Bible tells me so.

Father God, Thank you for your reassurances when we are in the ugly phases of our lives.  Thank you that we are not a random event, but a masterpiece created by a master craftsman - one of infinite value and worth. You planned our lives before the creation of the world.  Help us to see ourselves through your eyes - as becoming what you created us to be - a work of art. Amen and amen.
