You Gotta Have Hope

sunflower

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

When I was younger, one of the songs that I often heard was "You Gotta Have Heart." I think it is a fitting song for those of us who face chronic challenges.  The words are something like this:

"You've gotta have heart
All you really need is heart
When the odds are sayin' you'll never win
That's when the grin should start
You've gotta have hope
Mustn't sit around and mope
Nothin's half as bad as it may appear
Wait'll next year and hope
When your luck is battin' zero
Get your chin up off the floor
Mister you can be a hero
You can open any door, there's nothin' to it but to do it
You've gotta have heart
Miles 'n miles n' miles of heart
Oh, it's fine to be a genius of course
But keep that old horse
Before the cart
First you've gotta have heart."

Simplistic, I know.  And a bit silly.  And it leaves out something important - that God is the source of our hope.

But I think it's true.  We need to have God's love in our lives (aka: heart), and we need to have hope.  With hope in our hearts, we can face most any challenge life throws at us.

“For there is hope for a tree, When it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And its shoots will not fail.  Job 14:7

Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD.  Psalm 31:24

“And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. Psalm 39:7

Surely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off. Proverbs 23:18

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.” Lamentations 3:24

Return to the stronghold, O prisoners who have the hope; This very day I am declaring that I will restore double to you. Zechariah 9:12

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;  and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.  Romans 5:3-5

So, the word for today?

Hope.

Remember, you gotta have hope.

Father God, Thank you that you have provided us with a source of true hope - the hope that we have in Your Son.  Help us to remember to look to you for that hope.  Help us to realize that the hope we have in You is not that of some silly song or idle dream, but that hope in you is simply trusting in that which we cannot yet see.  Amen and amen
